Cannes 2021 opener “Annette,” directed by Leos Carax and starring Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard, has been snapped up by MUBI, the theatrical distributor and global “curated film” streaming service. The company has secured all rights to the movie for the U.K. and Ireland.
“Annette,” which stars Marion Cotillard (“Inception”) and Adam Driver (“Marriage Story”) as well as “The Big Bang Theory’s” Simon Helberg, is now set for a Sept. 3 theatrical release in the U.K. and Ireland.
Carax’s anticipated musical film features songs from pop duo Sparks (who wrote the screenplay) and music producer Marius de Vries (“La La Land”). It will also mark Belgian singer-songwriter Angèle’s acting debut.
The film is set in Los Angeles, with Driver playing a stand-up comedian and Cotillard a famous opera singer. The film follows the couple’s journey as they get together and welcome their first child, Annette, who turns out to be a gifted and enigmatic figure that will upend her parents’ lives.
In April, Cannes unveiled “Annette” was set for its prestigious opening slot, with festival president Pierre Lescure saying: “Every Leos Carax film is an event. And this one delivers on its promises! ‘Annette’ is the gift that lovers of cinema, music and culture were hoping for, one that we have been yearning for during the past year.”
“Annette” is written by Ron Mael and Russell Mael of Sparks and produced by Charles Gilibert, p.g.a., Paul-Dominique Win Vacharasinthu and Adam Driver. Kinology is handling international sales.
Amazon Studios have snapped up North American rights to the film, releasing it in late summer in theaters. It will also be available on Amazon Prime Video.

Sony Pictures has set a summer 2022 release date for 65, a film starring Adam Driver and Ariana Greenblatt. The pic will hit theaters nearly a year from now, on May 13, with plot details still being kept under wraps.
Written and directed by Scott Beck & Bryan Woods — who together scripted A Quiet Place — 65 marks a reunion for the duo with producer Sam Raimi. They wrote and directed an episode of his Quibi series 50 States of Fright last year.
If plans hold amid the Covid-sparked release-date turmoil of recent — and, likely, future — weeks and months, 65 would open against an untitled Blumhouse project from Universal. That’s the only wide opener set for May 13, 2022, thus far.
Deborah Liebling and Zainab Azizi also produce alongside, Woods and Raimi. Doug Merrifield is the executive producer.

The 74th edition of the Cannes Film Festival is set to open with Leos Carax’s anticipated romantic musical film “Annette” with Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard on July 7. The movie will also play in competition.
“Annette” will be released simultaneously in theaters in France by UGC. Amazon Studios, which has North American rights to the film, will release it in late summer in theaters and on Amazon Prime Video. “Annette” marks Carax’s English-language debut. “Annette’s” original screenplay, original songs and score were written and composed by Ron Mael and Russell Mael of the innovative rock band Sparks.
Set in contemporary Los Angeles, the film stars Driver as Henry, a stand-up comedian with a fierce sense of humor who falls in love with Ann (Cotillard), a world-renowned opera singer. Under the spotlight, they form a passionate and glamorous couple. With the birth of their first child, Annette, a mysterious little girl with an exceptional destiny, their lives are turned upside down. Simon Helberg also stars.
“Annette” is represented in international markets by Kinology. The film produced by Charles Gillibert (CG Cinéma International), Paul-Dominique Vacharasinthu (Tribus P. Films) and Driver, in association with Amazon Studios, Arte and Canal Plus.
Described as “visionary and enigmatic” by the festival, Carax has directed several cult movies over his long career, notably Pola X in 1999 and “Holy Motors” in 2012, both of which competed at Cannes. The difficult financing of Carax’s 1990 film “Les Amants du Pont Neuf” is a thing of legend in French cinema history. Eventually completed, it played the 1991 Cannes festival in an out of competition slot.
“Every Leos Carax film is an event. And this one delivers on its promises! Annette is the gift that lovers of cinema, music and culture were hoping for, one that we have been yearning for during the past year,” said Pierre Lescure, Cannes Film Festival president.
“We couldn’t have dreamed of a more beautiful reunion with cinema and the silver screen, in the Palais des festivals where films come to assert their splendor,” said Thierry Frémaux, Cannes’ chief. “Carax’s cinema is an expression of these powerful gestures, these mysterious alchemies that makes the secret of cinema’s modernity and eternity,” added Fremaux.
The festival will this year not be held in its usual mid-May slot. Instead, it will run July 6-17. It was previously announced that American director Spike Lee will be president of the jury that awards the festival’s major prizes.

We’ve known about the new Baumbach movie coming to Netflix since September 2020 when DiscussingFilm first reported the existence of the new movie. Back then, filming was scheduled to begin in February 2021 but any other details were few and far between.
The project will serve as Baumbach’s third for Netflix after Marriage Story which released in late 2019 to rave reviews and is often considered one of the best Netflix Original movies the service has produced. Baumbach’s other Netflix Original movie was The Meyerowitz Stories which released in 2017.
Marriage Story featured Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson and scored six Oscar nominations and went onto win an Oscar for Laura Dern for her supporting role.
Now, we know that Greta Gerwig and Adam Driver are attached to the third movie as the two leading roles. The untitled movie plot is being kept under wraps for now with filming still set to begin in February 2021.
Both stars really require no introductions but here’s a quick rundown on where you’ve seen Gerwig and Driver in action before.
Greta Gerwig is talented both in front and behind the camera with her biggest hits including Lady Bird (currently on Netflix US) behind the camera and Mistress America in front. Future projects include a new Barbie movie (also with Noah Baumbach attached) and an untitled tap-dancing musical project.
Adam Driver, of course, featured in Marriage Story and has taken over Hollywood in recent years largely due to his lead role in the Star Wars franchise. More recently, Driver has been filming a new historical drama in Ireland called The Last Duel due to release in 2021.
From the other characters announced (yet to be cast), we can discern it’s going to be a family drama with possibly four siblings Fritz, Debbie, Megan, and Walker each facing their own problems.
Netflix executive Sarah Bowen was attached to the project until she departed the studio in early December 2020.
We’ll be keeping a close on developments for this upcoming third movie from Baumbach and will update you as and when we hear of anything new.

EXCLUSIVE: With the Star Wars franchise in his rearview, Adam Driver is continuing to build out his slate of projects, with the Oscar nominee set to star in Sony’s 65. A Quiet Place writers Scott Beck & Bryan Woods will write and direct.
The duo will produce under their newly formed Beck/Woods banner along with Sam Raimi and Zainab Azizi, who will produce for Raimi Productions along with Debbie Liebling. The film marks a reunion for Beck and Woods with Raimi, as the two recently wrote and directed an episode of Raimi’s Quibi series 50 States of Fright.
Plot details for the original story are being kept under wraps. It is unknown when 65 will go into production as Driver has a handful of pics to choose from after he finishes shooting Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel. That film just restarted production after it was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. After that finishes, Driver has Scott’s Gucci, having recently signed on to co-star opposite Lady Gaga.
Driver is coming off a busy 2019 that included his Oscar-nominated performance in Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story, Amazon Studios’ The Report and reprising his role of Kylo Ren in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
Beck and Woods are best known for the critically acclaimed box-office smash A Quiet Place, based on their original screenplay. The film, and which they also executive produced, earned $340 million worldwide and Beck and Woods were nominated for Best Original Screenplay at the 2019 Critics’ Choice Awards and the Writers Guild of America Awards and won Best Film Screenplay at the Saturn Awards.
Driver is repped by Gersh and Sloane, Offer.

Although Ridley Scott still has to finish shooting his period drama The Last Duel, his follow-up is looking to land a monster cast. We are hearing that Adam Driver, Jared Leto, Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Jack Huston and Reeve Carney all are in talks to join MGM’s Gucci. Lady Gaga is attached to star as Patrizia Reggiani, the ex-wife of Maurizio Gucci who was tried and convicted of orchestrating her his assassination on the steps of his office in 1995. She served 18 years in jail before being let out in 2016.
It is the first project Lady Gaga has attached herself to since her Best Actress nomination in a breakout turn opposite Bradley Cooper in 2018’s A Star Is Born. She won an Oscar for writing the song “Shallow,” one of a number of hits on the soundtrack. MGM landed the rights to the package back in April with plans to go into production after Scott finished shooting The Last Duel, which goes back into production next week.
Scott’s partner Giannina Scott long has been passionate about the cinematic prospects for a film about the tumultuous Gucci family fashion dynasty and the murder of the grandson of founder Guccio Gucci. Scott, the actress-producer best remembered onscreen for playing the wife of Maximus (Russell Crowe) in the Scott-directed Gladiator, has produced with him a number of passion projects that include the Peter Landesman-directed Will Smith starrer Concussion, as well as the Liam Neeson starrer Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down the White House, also directed by Landesman. She originally brought the project to Scott. They have been companions since meeting on his 1996 film White Squall and they married in 2015. She also co-produced Matchstick Men and producer on Tristan & Isolde.
Scott most recently covered the inner workings of the super-rich when he helmed All the Money in the World, about the Getty kidnap drama, which won an Oscar nomination for Christopher Plummer as patriarch J. Paul Getty.
In the new film, Gaga will play Patrizia Reggiani, the ex-wife of Maurizio Gucci, who was tried and convicted of orchestrating her ex-husband’s assassination on the steps of his office in 1995. Maurizio had two daughters with Reggiani, but he left her for another woman. She’d had a brain tumor removed, and her children blamed it for her actions; the media took a darker view of her during a sensationalized affair, depicting her as a hot-blooded woman scorned and dubbing her “Black Widow.” She was originally drew a sentence of 29 years.
The Gucci murder tale is scripted by Roberto Bentivegna, based on Sara Gay Forden’s book The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed. Ridley will produce the Gucci saga with Giannina Scott and Scott Free Productions as well as Kevin Walsh.
Driver is repped by Gersh, Leto is repped by WME and Untitled Entertainment, De Niro and Pacino are repped by CAA, Huston is repped by CAA and Untitled, and Carney is with Paradigm and Luber Roklin Entertainment.
