Heat director Michael Mann is getting closer to the start line on his passion project Ferrari thanks to some strong new cast and a big domestic deal with STX.
We can reveal that Oscar nominee Adam Driver, Oscar winner Penélope Cruz and Emmy nominee Shailene Woodley are newly aboard for the big-budget biopic of racing mogul Enzo Ferrari.
Star Wars and House Of Gucci actor Driver is replacing Hugh Jackman in the title role while Parallel Mothers star Cruz will play Enzo’s wife Laura. Big Little Lies star Woodley will play mistress Lina Lardi. Four-time Oscar nominee Mann is gearing up for a May start in Italy.
STX is handling International rights and has now picked up domestic in a big deal with Mann. As we revealed in previous reporting on the project, Amazon is aboard in a handful of international markets. STX International will look to close remaining deals this week with some big international pacts already secured, including Leone in Italy.
The movie, which Mann has been working on for two decades, is set during the summer of 1957. Ex-racecar driver, Ferrari, is in crisis. Bankruptcy stalks the company he and his wife, Laura, built from nothing ten years earlier. Their tempestuous marriage struggles with the mourning for one son and the acknowledgement of another. He decides to counter his losses by rolling the dice on one race – 1,000 miles across Italy, the iconic Mille Miglia.

The project has famously been through multiple iterations, but this is as far along as the casting has been at any stage.

Mann will direct from a script by Troy Kennedy Martin (The Italian Job) and Mann based on Brock Yates’ book Enzo Ferrari – The Man and the Machine. The filmmaker is also producing via his Moto Productions banner alongside P.J. van Sandwijk and Birdman producer John Lesher, as well as Lars Sylvest, Thorsten Schumacher and Gareth West with Niels Juul executive-producing.

Michael Mann said today: “Being able to have these wonderfully talented artists, actors Adam Driver, Penélope Cruz and Shailene Woodley, bring to life these unique characters on location in Modena and the Emilia-Romagna is a vision fulfilled.”
Adam Fogelson, Chairman of STXfilms Motion Picture Group commented: “Ferrari is so much more than a story about a man and his machine. It is an extraordinary and emotional story that Michael has been developing for years and the entire team at STX is looking forward to the start of production with this dream cast and filmmaker. Adam Driver is one of the most talented and fascinating actors working today, and we could not be more thrilled to pair him with Penélope, whose legendary career builds with every role she takes.”
Jill Silfen, Executive VP of Business and Legal Affairs for STXfilms, and Harold Brown, of Gang, Tyre, Ramer, Brown & Passman negotiated the domestic deal for the respective parties.
Driver is a two-time Oscar-nominee for his work in BlacKkKlansman and Marriage Story. Recent credits include Annette, The Last Duel and House of Gucci. He next stars in Sony Pictures’ sci-fi thriller 65, as well as Netflix’s White Noise, Noah Baumbach’s adaptation of the Don DeLillo novel.

Cruz, nominated this week for the Best Actress Oscar in Parallel Mothers, won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Vicky Cristina Barcelona and was nominated another two times for her roles in Volver and Nine. In addition to Parallel Mothers for Sony, she currently stars in IFC’s Official Competition opposite Antonio Banderas.

Woodley was previously nominated for an Emmy for Big Little Lies and won the Independent Spirit Award for Alexander Payne’s The Descendants. Most recently, she can be seen in The Mauritanian with Jodie Foster and Benedict Cumberbatch. She is currently filming the Showtime limited series Three Women and can next be seen in Damian Szifron’s thriller Misanthrope.
Industry legend Mann is a four-time Academy Award nominee for Best Picture (The Insider, The Aviator), for Best Screenplay (The Insider) and for Best Director (The Insider) and an Emmy winner (The Jericho Mile). His feature writing and directing credits also include Heat, The Last of the Mohicans, Collateral, Public Enemies, Ali, Miami Vice, and Thief. He was also an executive producer on Oscar nominated Ford vs Ferrari.

Oscar-winning producer John Lesher, best known for Bird Man, Fury, Hostiles and Black Mass , recently collaborated with Mann on HBO limited series Tokyo Vice, which premieres in April.

BAFTA nominated producer P.J. van Sandwijk, is best known for The Rescue, Locked Down and Ron Howard’s upcoming Thirteen Lives as well as Tom Cruise’s Untitled Space Film, Hollywood’s first narrative feature film set to shoot in outer space. Niels Juul’s credits include The Irishman and Silence.

Cannes 2021 opener “Annette,” directed by Leos Carax and starring Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard, has been snapped up by MUBI, the theatrical distributor and global “curated film” streaming service. The company has secured all rights to the movie for the U.K. and Ireland.

“Annette,” which stars Marion Cotillard (“Inception”) and Adam Driver (“Marriage Story”) as well as “The Big Bang Theory’s” Simon Helberg, is now set for a Sept. 3 theatrical release in the U.K. and Ireland.

Carax’s anticipated musical film features songs from pop duo Sparks (who wrote the screenplay) and music producer Marius de Vries (“La La Land”). It will also mark Belgian singer-songwriter Angèle’s acting debut.

The film is set in Los Angeles, with Driver playing a stand-up comedian and Cotillard a famous opera singer. The film follows the couple’s journey as they get together and welcome their first child, Annette, who turns out to be a gifted and enigmatic figure that will upend her parents’ lives.

In April, Cannes unveiled “Annette” was set for its prestigious opening slot, with festival president Pierre Lescure saying: “Every Leos Carax film is an event. And this one delivers on its promises! ‘Annette’ is the gift that lovers of cinema, music and culture were hoping for, one that we have been yearning for during the past year.”

“Annette” is written by Ron Mael and Russell Mael of Sparks and produced by Charles Gilibert, p.g.a., Paul-Dominique Win Vacharasinthu and Adam Driver. Kinology is handling international sales.

Amazon Studios have snapped up North American rights to the film, releasing it in late summer in theaters. It will also be available on Amazon Prime Video.

We’ve known about the new Baumbach movie coming to Netflix since September 2020 when DiscussingFilm first reported the existence of the new movie. Back then, filming was scheduled to begin in February 2021 but any other details were few and far between.

The project will serve as Baumbach’s third for Netflix after Marriage Story which released in late 2019 to rave reviews and is often considered one of the best Netflix Original movies the service has produced. Baumbach’s other Netflix Original movie was The Meyerowitz Stories which released in 2017.

Marriage Story featured Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson and scored six Oscar nominations and went onto win an Oscar for Laura Dern for her supporting role.

Now, we know that Greta Gerwig and Adam Driver are attached to the third movie as the two leading roles. The untitled movie plot is being kept under wraps for now with filming still set to begin in February 2021.

Both stars really require no introductions but here’s a quick rundown on where you’ve seen Gerwig and Driver in action before.

Greta Gerwig is talented both in front and behind the camera with her biggest hits including Lady Bird (currently on Netflix US) behind the camera and Mistress America in front. Future projects include a new Barbie movie (also with Noah Baumbach attached) and an untitled tap-dancing musical project.

Adam Driver, of course, featured in Marriage Story and has taken over Hollywood in recent years largely due to his lead role in the Star Wars franchise. More recently, Driver has been filming a new historical drama in Ireland called The Last Duel due to release in 2021.

From the other characters announced (yet to be cast), we can discern it’s going to be a family drama with possibly four siblings Fritz, Debbie, Megan, and Walker each facing their own problems.

Netflix executive Sarah Bowen was attached to the project until she departed the studio in early December 2020.

We’ll be keeping a close on developments for this upcoming third movie from Baumbach and will update you as and when we hear of anything new.

Plot details for the original story are being kept under wraps. Although Ridley Scott still has to finish shooting his period drama The Last Duel, his follow-up is looking to land a monster cast. We are hearing that Adam Driver, Jared Leto, Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Jack Huston and Reeve Carney all are in talks to join MGM’s Gucci. Lady Gaga is attached to star as Patrizia Reggiani, the ex-wife of Maurizio Gucci who was tried and convicted of orchestrating her his assassination on the steps of his office in 1995. She served 18 years in jail before being let out in 2016.

It is the first project Lady Gaga has attached herself to since her Best Actress nomination in a breakout turn opposite Bradley Cooper in 2018’s A Star Is Born. She won an Oscar for writing the song “Shallow,” one of a number of hits on the soundtrack. MGM landed the rights to the package back in April with plans to go into production after Scott finished shooting The Last Duel, which goes back into production next week.

Scott’s partner Giannina Scott long has been passionate about the cinematic prospects for a film about the tumultuous Gucci family fashion dynasty and the murder of the grandson of founder Guccio Gucci. Scott, the actress-producer best remembered onscreen for playing the wife of Maximus (Russell Crowe) in the Scott-directed Gladiator, has produced with him a number of passion projects that include the Peter Landesman-directed Will Smith starrer Concussion, as well as the Liam Neeson starrer Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down the White House, also directed by Landesman. She originally brought the project to Scott. They have been companions since meeting on his 1996 film White Squall and they married in 2015. She also co-produced Matchstick Men and producer on Tristan & Isolde.

Scott most recently covered the inner workings of the super-rich when he helmed All the Money in the World, about the Getty kidnap drama, which won an Oscar nomination for Christopher Plummer as patriarch J. Paul Getty.

In the new film, Gaga will play Patrizia Reggiani, the ex-wife of Maurizio Gucci, who was tried and convicted of orchestrating her ex-husband’s assassination on the steps of his office in 1995. Maurizio had two daughters with Reggiani, but he left her for another woman. She’d had a brain tumor removed, and her children blamed it for her actions; the media took a darker view of her during a sensationalized affair, depicting her as a hot-blooded woman scorned and dubbing her “Black Widow.” She was originally drew a sentence of 29 years.

The Gucci murder tale is scripted by Roberto Bentivegna, based on Sara Gay Forden’s book The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed. Ridley will produce the Gucci saga with Giannina Scott and Scott Free Productions as well as Kevin Walsh.

Driver is repped by Gersh, Leto is repped by WME and Untitled Entertainment, De Niro and Pacino are repped by CAA, Huston is repped by CAA and Untitled, and Carney is with Paradigm and Luber Roklin Entertainment.
